Protein powders
Authorised claims about muscle and bone, and when a powder may use them.
Useful if
You want the authorised protein sentences and will check whether a powder is a source of protein.
Skip it if
You want a diet plan or a shake recipe.
A buying guide. Not a hands-on test, a score, or a reader story.
Protein, as a label note
Why this note
The claims are about muscle mass and bones, and only when the food is a source of protein.
In favour
- The sentences are on the EU register.
- Protein per serving is a number on the label.
Against
- A powder that misses the source rule cannot carry the claims.
- This is not a meal plan.
Protein powders are foods. The authorised claims are about muscle mass and bones, and only when the product is at least a source of protein. This is a labelling note, not a diet plan and not a shake recipe.
How to read this note
Start with the job of the product. Then read the trade-offs. The shop buttons come last, and they are advertising. Nothing above them is a test result.
What to look for
- Protein per serving, and whether that makes the product a source of protein
- The other ingredients, if you care about lactose or sweetener
- A scoop size that matches the numbers on the label
- A flavour you will actually use, so the tub does not sit open
What these supplement notes compare
The comparison is the wording on the label, not a promise about your training. Only authorised EU claims are quoted, and only with their conditions.
The authorised sentence
If a claim is not in the Union Register, it is not used here. No fat-loss lines, no recovery miracles.
The conditions
A daily amount, a source-of threshold, or a drink composition. The sentence applies only when the product meets them.
The person
Several claims are for adults. This site does not read symptoms and does not set a dose.
Authorised EU wording
“Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass.”
“Protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass.”
“Protein contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.”
Wording follows Regulation (EU) No 432/2012 and the Union Register of nutrition and health claims.
Supplement questions
Is this medical advice?
No. Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied diet and a healthy lifestyle, and they are not a substitute for medical advice. Pain and illness belong with a clinician who can assess you.
Why do you not name a dose?
A dose is a decision for you and, where it matters, for a clinician. The page only repeats the condition the EU attaches to the claim, such as 3 g of creatine a day for that one sentence.
